Q. How will I succeed if I have never painted before?
A. Since the company started in 1981, fewer than 10% of our managers have had any previous painting experience. Your primary focus, as a manager, will be overseeing your painting projects. This includes ensuring your customers are happy and your painters are motivated. During your training seminars, you will be trained in every aspect of basic painting. You will also receive on-site training and continual support from your experienced District Manager.
Q. How do I find enough work?
A. After training you will create your individual marketing plan with your District Manager. You will be furnished with all the marketing materials required to execute your plan. This will include 7500 high impact flyers, as many lawn signs as you need, and ongoing direction from your District Manager on how to reach your goals. By committing your Spring Break and several of your spring weekends to your summer business, and following the direction of your District Manager, you will have 4-6 weeks of your summer booked.
Q. How do I get my equipment?
A. Once you have begun estimating and booking jobs, we will guarantee a line of credit for you with a major retail supplier. We will also furnish you with a suggested equipment list based on the volume of business you have chosen to do. With this list, and a line of credit, you will be able to purchase your paint and equipment without interrupting your personal cash flow. Another option is buying second hand from a past manager.
Q. How do I get paid?
A. At training you will learn how to price a paint job. You will be taught how to calculate wages, materials, supplies and your profit. The average house will cost approximately $1500, and you should expect to earn at least 25% of this selling price. If a manager is following and working the systems they can expect to draw money from their account every two weeks.
Q. How do I find painters?
A. We provide you with recruiting materials and strategies, but usually, word of mouth works best. There are many great opportunities for hiring online as well. When it gets around campus and your home town that you are hiring, people will be calling you.
Q. Can I lose money?
A. You will not lose money! Student Edge takes the financial risk and invests in your training, marketing materials, mentoring, licensing, insurances, etc. The only investment you will make is in your own gas and phone expenses like you would with any other summer job. Some students choose to invest a small amount of their own money into marketing efforts. This might include hiring friends to help you market.
